Hi Jenny Ruth. I feel a great deal of sympathy for the Jewish people who were attacked and some taken hostage by Hamas. I agree with your analysis but you imply that this latest conflict will be what creates hatred from young Palestinians toward the state of Israel. Have you forgotten the tragic history of the past century on that land and the implacable militarism of Netanyahu (the video of his father speaking is chilling) repeatedly voted in by the Israeli people? In the current situation, unless and until the Jewish people change, as the Irish had to do, there will be no peace for anyone. I don't like the ad (which I'd already seen) because it does not acknowledge the suffering of anyone but Israelis and it makes unsubstantiated claims about new NZ hostility to Jews - based on UK Labour Party experience, all support for Palestine may well be counted in that category.
The ad shows there is no way forward as yet. But it should have been published as you say.
Until the Jewish people change??? Are you kidding?? How about Hamas change? Or is it ok for them to continue to state that every Jew should die?? There cannot be peace with Hamas involved.
Just as not all Israelis support Netanyahu and the rightwing turn in Israeli politics, the Palestinian people are not synonymous with Hamas.
The many Jewish people who have inspired me throughout my life, especially as a teenager, were opposed to the Israeli Zionist treatment of the Palestinians. They had already changed or were changing in my teens - accepting that there was no positive and just solution for Israel without a positive and just solution for the Palestinian people.
What is clear to me is that there will be no peace until the Palestinian people decide that's what they want. I'm very pleased to see some Palestinians are starting to protest the rule of Hamas - that's an organisation dedicated to the destruction of Israel and that's what its slogan "from the river to the seas" means. Evil, in my view
Your article highlights to me how much the corporate media has always been Citizen Kane and never the charming fictional story of publish and be damned.
Publish and be damned ends up like Gary Webb, suicided with two gunshots to the back of the head.
Advertising isn't journalism. It's a commercial operation. It's entirely reasonable for a newspaper to run adverts that will make it money. That's the point. So it's also entirely reasonable for them to not run ads that will drive away readers. Extreme political views are one such type of ads that will be revenue losing in the long run.
Sorry but that ad does not represent extreme views. I disagree with it (see above), but those are mainstream views and NZ needs open and transparent debate.
